For Parents

You do not need to know Singapore school jargon to help your child. Here is the year in plain words.

How the school year is checked

  • Term Tests — small checks during the year on what has just been taught. Schools call these weighted assessments (WA).
  • Mid-Year Exam — a bigger check halfway through the year, where schools hold one. In Singapore this is SA1.
  • End-of-Year Exam — the main exam, covering the whole year. In Singapore this is SA2.
  • PSLE — Singapore’s national exam at the end of primary school (Primary 6), used for secondary school posting.

Reading your child’s results

A single total can mislead — papers differ from school to school. What matters is the pattern by topic: which topics are secure, and which keep losing marks. That is why every SGMathKids paper comes with a parent report that breaks the attempt down by topic, tells you whether each mistake was a missing concept, a misread question or incomplete working, and gives you practice questions aimed at exactly those weak topics.

Talking to the teacher

Teachers can help most when you bring one concrete example — a question or topic your child found hard — rather than a general worry. Agree one small next step, and a date to check whether it worked. Our parent report is written to make that conversation easy: it gives you the example and the evidence to bring.

More parent guides are on the way, covering each level, the PSLE year, and how to practise at home without overloading your child.
